Pushpa Basnet is only 28, yet she is ‘mother’ to a huge number of children – 35 young Nepali boys and girls to be precise.
Pushpa comes from a rich Nepalese family, and might have ended up going into business like her relatives if a visit to a prison in Kathmandu had not changed all that.
As part of her studies for a degree in Social Welfare, Pushpa met children who were living behind bars with mothers who had committed crimes like murder and drug trafficking.
Touched by the plight of one little girl, Pushpa decided to do everything in her power to get the children out of jail and look after them.
Now she has set up a charity and has effectively become the mother to 35 of the prisoners’ children.
Outlook reporter Rebecca Henschke went to meet Pushpa Basnet and her huge ‘family’ of children.
